Part 07: Seldon on Dialectical Method Series.

Heterogeneity vs. Homogeneity.

Dear Reader,

It is my pleasure, and my honor, as an elected member of the Foundation Encyclopedia Dialectica [F.E.D.] General Council, and as a voting member of F.E.D., to share, with you, from time to time, as they are approved for public release by the F.E.D. General Council, Encyclopedia Dialectica insights into key concepts of Seldonian Theory.

The statement posted below describes the senses in which universal «aufheben» processes of ‘[self-]meta-unit-ization’ produce ontologically new [meta-]units, from either a heterogeneous multiplicity or a homogeneous multiplicity of the predecessor ‘self-hybrid’ kind of ontological-categorial units.

Seldon –

When we say, for example, that a molecule unit is a ‘meta-unit’ of/to atom units, and that molecule units arise from self-«aufheben» ‘self-meta-unit-izations’ of/by atom units, e.g., in the primordial ‘atomic clouds’, as they first become [atomic-and-]“molecular clouds”, we often also say that ‘each typical molecule unit is made up out of a heterogeneous multiplicity of atom units’, those atom units having thus become that molecule’s sub-units.”

“Now, of course, there are atypical molecule units – molecule units of, e.g., H2, O2, O3-, etc. – which are exceptions to that formulation.”

“They belong, not to our cosmo-ontological category qaa |-º qm, but rather to cosmo-ontological category qma, and we will leave those exceptional cases of molecule units aside for the purposes of this discussion.”

“By “typical” molecules, we mean units such as H2O, CO2, CH4, NH3, etc., etc., which combine atom units of two or more different “atomic species”.”

“Now, those typical molecule units are made up out of a heterogeneous” multiplicity of atom units if we regard the atom units as constituting a species level of our taxonomy-in-use.  Each atom-unit-kind then constitutes a different species, so that each atom-unit-kind is visible as qualitatively heterogeneous with respect to every other such atom unit-kind.”

“However, suppose we regard the atoms cosmo-ontological category as a «genos» ontological category.  Then, as all of the atom-unit-kinds included in a given molecule unit are then bundled together, abstracted-from as representing just units of “atoms-in-general”, without any species distinctions among them being visible, or invoked, then, instead, each typical molecule-unit is made up out of atoms, i.e., is made up out of a homogeneous multiplicity of generic atoms.
