Dear Reader,

As we see it, the ‘dialectic of tools’ goes like this –

1.  «arché» category: Tools, qT, e.g., hand tools;

2.  first contra-category: Machines

qTT |-º qM,

[e.g., production machinery];

3.  first uni-category: Complex Unities of Tools & Machines, qMT |-º qU,

In this view, the category-name “machines” names a kind of units each of which is an ‘«aufheben»-ation’ of multiple tools units.

That is, each typical production machine unit is a meta-tool unit, each one made up out of a – transformed – heterogeneous multiplicity of production hand tool units.

Each machine unit is an transformation-conservation-elevation of many hand tool units.

¿But what of ‘‘‘synthesis’’’ category-symbol qMT?

¿What category can that symbol possibly describe?

We see this category-symbol as describing the actual practice of industrial, machinery-using, production.

¡It is not that production machinery simply replaces, erases, or abstractly negates hand-held tools, into a nothingness!

In actual industrial practice, new kinds of handheld tools are needed, to enable mechanics, technicians and engineers to test and to repair large-scale industrial machines.

One can, of course, imagine a future scenario in which production machinery, in a context of “complete automation”, is self-repairing, and/or is repaired using tools held only in the robotic hands of AI android robots, no longer ever by any tools held in human hands.

However, this scenario is best conceived analogously to the idealization of a mathematical asymptote, and the limit toward which an asymptote converges is never actually reached, in all finite time.

The extinction of all units of the human, hand-held tools kind, making the “Tools” category an empty category, and reducing the “Complex Unities of Tools & Machines” category back to just the “Machines” category, is still a distant horizon, and horizons recede as one advances toward them.
