Dear Reader,

In a news item from www.msn.com, a story recently surfaced, titled “Scientists Just Found a Weird Form of Water that’s Both Solid and Liquid at the Same Time”, based on a scientific article recently published in the journal “Nature Communications”.

It describes a water-form that is a ‘“complex unity”’ of liquid and solid qualities, called “superionic ice”.

This water-from is not part of ordinary human experience on planet Earth.

It is, based upon laboratory simulations, to be found on other planets in our Solar System – Neptune and Uranus – where ultra-high atmospheric pressures hyper-compress H2O molecules into this exotic, newly-discovered water-form.

This water-form is constituted by the linkage of the Oxygen atoms in H2O into an irregular structure, quasi-crystalline, such that the resulting crustal-like lattice oscillates continually, back and forth, between the poles of liquid-like and solid-like qualities, unable to fix on either form.

The Oxygen atoms of the H2O are locked in this quasi-lattice, while the Hydrogen atoms, or their charged, single-proton core constituents, are free to roam, constituting a substance that cannot be confined, or correctly defined, as either liquid in phase or solid in phase.

The irony is that so-called “ice giant” planets like Neptune and Uranus may be, in reality, at least in their deep interiors, almost ice-less, mainly containing this hybrid form, neither liquid nor solid in quality, but also both liquid and solid in quality.

This exotic substance, “superionic” H2O, may be the cause of anomalies in the shapes and intensities of the magnetic fields of so-called – ‘mis-nomered’ – “ice giant” planets, due to its effect(s) on the transport of electricity and heat in their planetary interiors.

Yet another Dialectic of Nature”, unknown to Engels at the time of writing of his “Dialectics of Nature”!
