Contemporization of the Ancient «Arithmos» Concept.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Dear Reader,

 

 

 

It is my pleasure, and my honor, as an elected member of the Foundation Encyclopedia Dialectica [F.E.D.] General Council, and as a voting member of F.E.D., to share, with you, from time to time, as they are approved for public release by the F.E.D. General Council, Encyclopedia Dialectica insights into key concepts of Seldonian Theory.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The statement posted below describes the F.E.D. «aufheben» of the ancient Greek, etc., «arithmos» concept – the ancient concept of ‘“number”’ – at the heart of the Seldonian dialectical method.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Seldon –

“Our «kosmos» develops as a self-iterating sequence of ‘«aufheben»-ations’ – of dialectical or «aufheben» processes – in which, each advancing irruption of new-«arithmos»-forming ‘meta-«monad»-izations’ gives rise to the next higher ‘qualo-quanto-fractal scale’ of cosmological ontology.”

 

“More specifically, the primordial and ‘«arché»-ic’ units that we call pre-nuclear and pre-atomic “particles” at length produce ‘meta-particles’ – the ‘meta-units’ or ‘meta-«monads»’ that we call “atoms”.”

 

“In turn the «arithmoi» of atoms produce ‘meta-atoms’, those ‘meta-units’ that we call “molecules” – «arithmoi» or ‘‘‘numbers’’’, i.e.,  populations – of molecules.”

 

“On Earth, in so far as we Terrans know, but possibly and even likely ubiquitously and typically, throughout our «kosmos», e.g., in and on at least some of the planets that we now – lately – know ubiquitously populate our galaxy, and likely also the plethora of galaxies that we now perceive, these successive processes of ‘«aufheben» meta-unit-ization’ go far further.”

 

“Molecule units’ «arithmoi» beget the ‘meta-molecule’ units that scientists call “prokaryotic living cells”.  The «arithmoi» of prokaryote units beget the ‘meta-prokaryote’ units that scientists call “eukaryotes” – “eukaryotic living [meta-]cells”.  The eukaryote «arithmoi» then beget the ‘meta-eukaryote’ units that we call the ‘meta-biota’ – “multicellular organisms”; ‘multi-eukaryotic-cellular organisms’, the “meta-phyta” and “meta-zoa”.  The «arithmoi» of these, asocial, ‘meta-biota’ then beget, in their turn, the new «arithmoi» of ‘meta-meta-biota’, of proto-language-based “social animals”, and of what we call ‘social plants’.”

 

“Finally, so far – at least so far on planet Terra – these ‘mere society-units’; these units of ‘social meta-biota’, form ‘meta-meta-social units’, the units that we call ‘meta-societies’, anchored in the sociality and ‘meta-sociality’ of a human[oid] species.  A ‘meta-society’ unit is a coalescence of multiple animal and plant societies, a pre-Neolithic or Neolithic-plus human society, formed by the mutual incorporation, mutual domestication, and Darwinian and ‘meta-Darwinian’ symbiosis, of a human[oid] [hyper-]social species with other merely-social species – wolves/dogs, reindeer, horses, cattle, oxen, elephants, etc., etc., together with species of domesticable, cultivable ‘social plants’.”

 

“Note that these «arithmoi» that we have been talking about are qualitative as well as quantitative “numbers”; they are ‘qualo-quantitative’, being numbers of units that all share a definite quality in common with one another.  They are, indeed, ‘kind categories’, which, at any given time, ‘‘‘contain’’’ a definite quantity of the units of their quality, or kind.  Often the exact quantity of such units from moment to moment is varying and unknown.  But the quality that all of this indefinite number of units of a given kind share is known.”

 

The ‘psychohistoricality’ of the ancient Mediterraneans featured a mental – and contra-empirical – absolutism about units, about the, abstract, “«monads»”; a radical dualism of “«monads»” versus «arithmoi»: “a unit is not composed of units”.  But we can see that the units of the kind that we addressed above are also «arithmoi», just as an «arithmos» can be grasped as also a unit, a unit extension or “set” of its kind.  Thus, a typical molecule unit is also a mini-«arithmos» of atom units.  A typical atom unit is also a mini-«arithmos» of “particles”.”

 

“Thus emerges more dialectical, non-dualistic concepts of both «monads» and «arithmoi», relative to the concepts thereof that characterized, and limited, the human phenome, and the ‘meta-Darwinian fitness’ – the scale of the ‘societal self-reproductive self-force’ – of the humanity of ancient Mediterranean antiquity.”
