Internet Dialogue on Engels’s “Dialectics of Nature”
Manuscript.
Dear Reader,
I recently responded to a Reddit query regarding Engels’s “Dialectics
of Nature”, as follows --

My Response.
Engels unfinished "Dialectics of Nature" manuscript -- never
finally polished for publication by Engels -- features an ill-posed because
abstract-from-history "law-ification" of material dialectics, falling
into the error of "abstract materialism" for which Marx criticized
modern, bourgeois natural science. Once
the "aufheben" operation at the core of categorial dialectics is
concretized for and located within Natural History, it becomes possible to see
the totality of the known history of Nature, including human Nature as a
[later] part thereof, as a singular 'Dialectic of Nature'. Of course, the history of Nature was much less known to science in the late 1800s than it is today, so Engels hardly had what he needed to grasp the historical dialectic of natural history as THE totality.
