‘The Systematic
Dialectic of Porphyry’s «Isagoge»’, First Triad.
Dear
Reader,
The Systematic-Dialectic of
Porphyry the Phoenician’s «Isagoge»,
depicted below, is based upon Porphyry’s explication of Aristotle’s doctrine to
the effect that ‘‘‘Genus plus Differences equals Species’’’.
The image pasted-in below is a visualization of an NQ dialectical meta-model
of the [table of] contents of Porphyry’s famed circa 270 C.E. Introduction
to Aristotle’s Categories. That introduction was composed, originally, as
a personal letter to a Roman Senator, Chrysaorius, who wrote to Porphyry,
asking for Porphyry’s aid in helping Chrysaorius to grasp Aristotle’s
theory of categories.
Porphyry’s short text became a famous one in
the Middle Ages, and has remained so since, although eclipsed lately, somewhat,
by the massive modern development of ‘ideographical formal logic’, including of
modern mathematical logic, e.g., by that of the sentential calculus, of the first
order predicate calculus, and, to a lesser extent, of higher-order predicate
calculi.
The ‘phonetic text/ideogramic/pictogramic
module’ pasted-in below encompasses this meta-model
only through step/stage Ks3 = 1 --
1.
The first ‘‘‘category’’’ presented in this ‘‘‘systematic-dialectic’’’
method of presentation, mapped by this meta-model, is the super-category
– the category of categories, or category about
[other] categories -- whose units
are mere categories that are of the “Genus”
kind.
2.
The second ‘‘‘category’’’ presented in the ‘‘‘systematic-dialectic’’’
method of presentation mapped by this meta-model is the super-category -- the category of categories,
or category about [other] categories
-- whose units are mere categories
that are of the ‘‘‘Essential , Specific
Differences’’’ kind.
3.
The third ‘‘‘category’’’ presented in this ‘‘‘systematic-dialectic’’’
method of presentation, mapped by this meta-model, is the super-category
– the category of categories, or the category
about [other] categories -- each of whose units
consists of ‘‘‘Essential, Specific Differences’’’,
applied to or “added to” a Genus
category, and thereby defining a Species category, whose
units inhere immanently &
implicitly ‘‘‘within’’’ said Genus. From such Essential Differences
divisions of Genera categories into Species
categories arise, &, per Aristotle, definitions
are expressed, since each definition is composed of a Genus
&
such Differences.
