Dear Reader,

Recent astrophysical computer simulations1 – “numerical solutions” of nonlinear differential equations still unsolved “analytically”, in “closed form” – have given rise to the hypothesis that “Ice Giant” planets, e.g., Uranus and Neptune in our local stellar-planetary system, have a middle layer, or, better, a new kind of middle zone inside them, one which instantiates a Carbon-Hydride “hybrid” phase of matter that has not yet been observed empirically, and which the researchers have named a “superionic state”.

The researchers described this “hybrid” phase, a qualitative mean’ -like, mediating ‘‘‘complex unity’’’ of solid and rheid behaviors, that emerged in their computer simulations, as follows –

“In this superionic state, a hybrid phase where one [kind of] atom stays put [the Carbon atoms] and another [kind of] atom [the Hydrogen atoms] move[s] freely, solidity and flow coexist.” [emphasis added by M.D.].

“Here, carbon formed a rigid framework while hydrogen moved along spiral routes, so the material behaved partly like a solid and partly like a fluid.” [emphasis added by M.D.].

The writer of the cited article also noted another rare feature of the simulated “hybrid”, ‘rigid/rheid’ phase: “Because hydrogen favored one route, the material showed anisotropy, which is different behavior depending on direction, in how it carried heat and charge.” [emphasis added by M.D.].
