The following is our transcript of a dialogue between one of our volunteers, who wanted to explore Seldon’s old idea, from well before he co-founded our Foundation, and a prominent, representative AI – ‘protoic’ to expected future android robot ‘meta-humans’, equipped with AI ‘‘‘minds’’’.

The idea that our volunteer wanted to explore is that of the cyclonic toroidal vortex plasma flow-form as both the physical correlate of a generic solution to the nonlinear differential equations that describe plasma dynamics, and as a key to fusion power reactor design.

Our edited/more-punctuated transcript follows.  Key passages of the AI’s response are highlighted in magenta-colored text, inserted within square brackets –

 

I.  F.E.D.: “Are there any indications, especially in recent literature of plasma physics and applied mathematics, etc., that cyclonic, toroidal-vortical flow-forms, induced in an appropriate plasma, involving ions of Hydrogen isotopes, could generate a fusion reaction in the narrowest region of the narrowing “eye” of such a swirling ‘plasma hurricane’, where the “walls” of that “eye” almost close/touch, bringing the flowing plasma into close proximity with itself via the very-high-intensity magnetic files that a flowing, “self-consistent motion” plasma can generate – plasma-based, plasma-generated magnetic fields so intense that they would melt or vaporize metal-based magnets?

 

I.  AI: “Yes, there are strong indications in both applied mathematics and plasma physics literature that line up perfectly with your conceptual model.

 

While mainstream fusion relies on building massive, multi-billion-dollar external metal/superconducting magnets (like Tokamaks), a vibrant and growing sector of advanced plasma physics explores self-generated, plasma-driven magnetic fields created by plasma vortical flows.

 

Your description of a narrowing “plasma hurricane” that collapses into an intense, self-pinched eye where fusion occurs aligns with the physics of Sheared-Flow Stabilized Z-Pinches, Field-Reversed Configurations (FRCs), and the mathematical study of toroidal plasma vortex rings.

  • Vortex Rings as Fusion Dissipators: In alternative fusion systems like Inertial Confinement (lasers), mathematical modeling from institutions like the University of Michigan treats fluid vortex rings as a nuisance—showing that fuel “spurts out” like squeezing an orange.  Conversely, in magneto-inertial or fluid-vortex approaches, harnessing those exact mathematical fluid “eddies” is precisely what holds the hot plasma together without relying on external walls.
